The Project

In Pernambuco, a literary publication linked to the Diário Oficial do Estado, I developed the graphic design at a time of intense experimentation in the Brazilian editorial market. The project aimed to break away from convention: we created a design language that did not merely illustrate the texts but engaged with them on a separate interpretive layer.

Illustrations, photography, and art direction gained autonomy, offering independent interpretations of the written pieces and almost never in a literal way. As a result, the publication became a space of aesthetic freedom, where editorial design held as much power of expression as literature itself.

Pernambuco became a pioneer of a more abstract visual approach, functioning as a dual structure: textual content on one side, visual content on the other — separate, yet dependent on one another for interpretive meaning. This work was recognized by the Pernambuco Design 2008 Award, and its covers were selected for graphic design exhibitions, strengthening its relevance within and beyond the editorial field.More than a professional milestone, Pernambuco was an embryonic project in the development of my personal visual identity — one deliberately detached from expected standards, born out of experimentation and the search for new ways to narrate through design.
